		Integrated watershed management

	an extremely important waterand land ecological region.Integrated watershed management will take consideration of several key concerns in decision making including: 1) to provide a number of competing users with a range of functions to meet their demands; 2) to protect the inherent functions of ecological systems; 3) to reduce water pollution and environmental degradation, and to improve living conditions of local people.

	Climate change and sustainable development
	Apply participatory action-oriented approaches to address two fundamental
	questions: How will rapid economic growth and climate change affect water and ecosystem sustainability and human well-being in local communities? And how can we enhance human well-being while reducing adverse effects of economic activities, as well as global change on regional sustainability?

	Environment and human health To assess the damage and threats posed by persistent toxic chemicals to environmental and human health;
To determine the relative priorities among persistent toxic chemicals taking account of the distance scales of transport and the nature and modes of adverse effect and threats associated with exposures to PTS; To examine the linkages between ecological conditions and schistomiasis distribution; To identify effective policy options to reduce risks

	Integrated assessment with consideration across several major international multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs),
To develop systems analysis approach integrating consideration across several major international multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) including? the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (CCD); ?To improve environmental governance in China.

	Urban sustainability decision support system
	To design new tools for providing decision support on urban and regional sustainability; ?To identify urban development paths which can reduce energy and matter throughput while increasing human well-being

Researchers and associates of CHANGES have led and completed many relevant research projects including design and implement of two projects funded by Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) on carbon sequestration and climate adaptation in China; carry out a joint project that is still underway to apply an integrated research approach to assess drought risk for agriculture and water availability under climate variations and change in northwest China; conduct projects on land policy evaluation, farm household surveys, policy meetings, training courses for Chinese resource managers and policy makers all over China; research the links between population policy and regional sustainable development; and conduct research on persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in China including POPs usage/emission data collection, POPs concentration monitoring, and toxic substances exposure risk assessment.
